Teachers must support efforts to end exam malpractices

Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur says teachers have an important part to play in efforts to end examination malpractices.
The Vice president urged teachers across the country to support the efforts by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) to end the cheating at exams halls and the recurrent feature of exams question leakage.
He also said efforts by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to check charging of unapproved fees at some schools can be successful with the help of teachers.
The Vice President made these comments during the World Teachers Day and 21st National Best Teacher Awards ceremony held in Tamale.

The event was on the theme: “Empowering Teachers Building Sustainable Societies.” The annual event provides an opportunity to reward teachers across the country.
This year’s national best teacher award ceremony saw a complete departure from the status quot where an individual was awarded the overall national best teacher of the year.
52 teachers and 360 schools from the KG, primary, JHS and SHS levels were honored at the event.
Vice President Amissah-Arthur stated that government was committed to improving the welfare of teachers to enable them deliver quality education.
He said unresolved issues between the teacher’s unions and the Ghana Education Service regarding payment of arrears and vehicle maintenance allowance and transfer grants would soon come to an end.
The Vice President was hopeful that ongoing efforts by the ministries of finance, employment and labor relations, the Controller and Accountant Generals department, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the National Labor Commission to bring the matter to rest would be successful.
Government, meanwhile, says it has released GHC4.5 million to pay outstanding allowances of teachers across the country following a strike threat by the National Association of Graduates Teachers (GNAT).
GNAT had told government it must meet its obligations or face a strike next week.
