12 Teenagers Arrested in Kampala After Video of Brutal Mob Assault Goes Viral

A disturbing video out of Kampala, Uganda, has sparked outrage across social media — and it's led to a dozen arrests.

The footage shows a teenage boy being punched and beaten by a group of other teenagers in Kabalagala, in the Makindye Division of Kampala. The incident reportedly happened on Sunday, September 13, but it wasn't until the clip started circulating online that authorities moved in.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, all 12 suspects are teenagers themselves, aged between 14 and 17, and believed to be students. Police say the arrests were carried out over two days — September 17 and 18 — with the final suspect picked up at around 2am on the 18th, during an operation in the Makindye area.

The attack itself took place in Nakibinge Zone, Kibuli Parish. The victim was rushed to hospital afterward and has since been discharged, though he's reportedly still receiving treatment at home under his mother's care.

All 12 suspects remain in custody at Kabalagala Police Station while investigators work to piece together exactly what happened and who did what — a process that matters a lot here, since this is being treated as a juvenile case.

In a statement, Kawala didn't mince words: the police "strongly condemn acts of violence, particularly those involving minors," stressing that anyone found responsible will be handled "in accordance with the law and applicable procedures governing juvenile offenders."

The bigger picture: this is yet another case of a video doing what a bystander sometimes doesn't — forcing accountability. It's also a sobering reminder of how quickly teenage conflict can spiral into something violent and public, with consequences that follow kids well beyond the moment the phone stops recording.
