Ghana Flood Death Toll Rises to 34 as Rescue Efforts Continue

NADMO rescue teams evacuating residents during severe flooding in Ghana.

Ghana Flood Death Toll Climbs to 34

Ghana is once again grappling with the devastating effects of severe flooding after the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed that the nationwide death toll has risen to 34 following the heavy rains that swept across the country earlier this week. Authorities have warned that the number could increase as rescue teams continue searching for missing persons and verifying reports from affected communities.

According to NADMO's Director of Inspectorate, Richard Amo Yartey, 12 of the confirmed deaths occurred in Accra, while the remaining fatalities were recorded in other flood-affected regions. Emergency responders remain on the ground carrying out rescue operations and distributing relief supplies to victims.

Thousands Displaced Across Seven Regions

Beyond the tragic loss of life, the floods have left widespread destruction in their wake. Tens of thousands of residents have been displaced after homes, businesses and roads were submerged.

NADMO reports that nearly 90,000 people have been affected across seven regions, with the Greater Accra Region recording the highest number of displaced residents. Officials continue to assess the full extent of the damage as floodwaters recede.

Renewed Calls for Flood Prevention

The latest disaster has once again sparked debate over Ghana's recurring flood crisis. Every rainy season, communities face similar challenges, with blocked drainage systems, poor waste management and rapid urban development frequently cited as contributing factors.

While emergency agencies continue responding to the immediate crisis, many Ghanaians are calling for long-term investments in drainage infrastructure, stricter enforcement of building regulations and improved early warning systems to help prevent future tragedies.

As search and recovery efforts continue, the nation mourns those who lost their lives while many affected families begin the difficult process of rebuilding.
