British Airways is 75 years in Ghana!!!
Seventy-five years ago a handful of passengers boarded a bi-plane for a one-week journey which would pioneer an air service that today still links Ghana and the United Kingdom.
On 13 October 1937, the DH86 Diana class aircraft operated by Elders Colonial Airways on behalf of Imperial Airways arrived in Accra for the first time. This once-weekly service between Southampton and Accra took almost one week, involving nine stops between the UK and the Central African hub of Khartoum.
A couple of years later, the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) was formed under the BOAC Act, from the merger of Imperial Airways and British Airways Ltd, a British airline that operated in Europe in the 1930s.
In 1974, the UK government dissolved BOAC and British European Airways to form the global carrier, British Airways, as we know it today. 1987 saw the airline privatised in a hugely oversubscribed flotation of shares on the London Stock Exchange, as well as the appointment of British Airways’ first women pilots.
In 2002, British Airways begun daily, non-stop flights between Accra and London on a Boeing 767 aircraft. The six-hour overnight flight is extremely popular for business travellers, who enjoy the convenience of a full working day in Ghana, and an early morning arrival for easy onward connection to other destinations.
Today, British Airways operates to Ghana on a Boeing 777-200 aircraft with a four-class configuration, which features its innovative First (First Class) product, along with Club World (Business Class), World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy) and World Traveller (Economy Class).
Currently, British Airways is the only airline to offer a first class service in and out of Ghana, and its £100m investment into the improved product is proving extremely popular on the route.
Iberia, the Spanish national carrier, merged with British Airways in January 2011 to the International Airline Group. In July 2012, Iberia launched it’s twice-weekly Ghana operation, with Economy and Business Class Cabins on an Airbus A319 aircraft. So far, Iberia’s operations have been “extremely encouraging.”
“It’s amazing to think that 75 years ago we were operating bi-planes that could carry seven passengers and the journey took over a week, when you consider that today we have daily flights a day that do the journey in about six hours,” says James Wooldridge, British Airways commercial manager for Ghana.
“We believe very strongly in investing in the communities we operate in, and Ghana has benefited greatly from such commitments over the past 75 years,” says Wooldridge.
British Airways’ CEO, Keith Williams was recently in Ghana to support Flying Start, the airline’s partnership with UK charity, Comic Relief, which was launched two years ago to raise money around the world for good causes. Flying Start hopes to raise £500,000 by the end of 2012 to vaccinate 100,000 Ghanaian children against deadly diseases.

Mother of three watches in horror as her American Bulldog is stabbed 23 times by irate pet owner after it had a fight with another dog
A dog died after being stabbed 23 times in a frenzied attack by another dog owner. Mother of three Daisy Jenkins cradled her dying American Bulldog Tyson following the daylight attack.
Her dog had got in a fight with another dog in a walkway near her Hampstead home in north London.
WARNING: Graphic images
Attack: Mother of three Daisy Jenkins cradled her dying American Bulldog following the vicious daylight attack
The owner of the other dog Wayne Stearman, 41, left the scene and returned with two 10-inch knives before stabbing the bulldog.
One of the blows was so forceful that the knife bent in half in what one witness described as a ‘blood bath’.
Today, Mr Stearman said he knifed the dog because he was only trying to stop it killing his own terrier Monty. Mr Stearman said: 'The dog’s a lunatic. I’d just stepped out my house and the dog went for him. It wasn’t on a lead. It locked its jaw on to Monty’s head. He’s only little and he’s a donut around other dogs. 'It was like a lion on top of a gazelle. I was screaming for help and the owner was nowhere to be seen.
Dying: The owner of the other dog left the scene and returned with two 10-inch knives before stabbing Tyson
'When she did finally turn up five minutes later all she did was stroke her dog. I was kicking and punching it but it wouldn’t budge so I went into the kitchen and got three knives. 'I’m not proud of what I’ve done but what was I supposed to do, stand there and let it kill my dog?' Mr Stearman said the bulldog tried to attack his dog three months earlier.
He said: 'I literally had to pick Monty up and throw him over the fence because this dog was going to go for him. He’s attacked loads of dogs on this estate and he’s even gone for a kid outside the Budgens up the road. 'I’m just glad it happened to me because it was only a matter of time before it killed a kid.' Eleven-year-old Monty, who Mr Stearman has had since he was a puppy, suffered bite marks to his head, face, ear and chin and now flinches when anyone tried to touch him.
'He’s going to be alright but it has affected him. I’m on anti depressants because I can’t stop thinking about it. I can’t sleep. It’s been an absolute nightmare,' Mr Stearman said. The waterways worker, of Belsize Park, north London, was arrested over the incident and held in a police cell for 22 hours but has since been released without charge.
Pet: Tyson was an American bulldog like this one pictured. A 41-year-old man was since been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage
He could be charged with criminal damage but is not expecting any further action to be taken against him.
'The police have actually been very sympathetic to me. It’s not nice to say but people are happy now the dog’s gone. It caused so much trouble round here,' he said.
Miss Jenkins, 41, who has since set up a shrine to her dog at the spot where he died, had begged passers-by to help her as Tyson died on the Aspern estate near Hampstead.
Witness Allison Havey said: 'It was a bloodbath. She was covered in blood and she was just saying: ‘Please help. Help me make my dog live.’ It was very sad indeed.'
A vet was called to try to save Tyson, but the 42kg bulldog died on the footpath.
Miss Jenkins said of the attack: 'We were just clinging together right up against the fence and trying to keep away from the knives.
'I could feel bleeding but I just held him tightly. I thought if I pretended to be dead he would leave us alone. 'I just kept saying to Tyson ‘hang on, please hang on, pull through’. She was unavailable for further comment today. Neighbour Kim McFarland, 54, claimed Miss Jenkins let to dog run around the estate.
She said: 'Daisy always used to let the dog off the lead and it would run round the estate.
'It used to go for other dogs. It never had a muzzle on.
'One neighbour only just managed to get her dog inside once before he went for it. Even when she closed the door it kept charging at it.'
Weapon: One of the blows was so forceful the knife bent in half in what one witness described as a 'blood bath'
The grandmother-of-10, who has lived on the estate for 22 years, said the man, was acting in self defense and was ‘devastated’ about what had happened. She said: 'He’s a dog lover himself and he’s not the kind of person to go around doing things like that. He was just trying to save his dog who is a lot smaller and older. 'Daisy had let Tyson off his lead and he ran into the woods and got hold of this other dog by the throat. I don’t even think she was there at the time to stop him.
'The other dog owner tried to punch Tyson to get him off but he’s a big dog. He went inside to get something and the next thing I heard was a dog’s been stabbed and it’s dead.
'He literally couldn't get Tyson off his dog. What was he supposed to do, wait until it killed his dog? It would have been the same circumstances - a dog would still be dead.'

They've had a ruff time! Adorable puppies bred on illegal dog farm found stuffed into car boot bound for Britain (but don't worry, the poor things are alright now)
These adorable puppies had more than a stroke of luck after being rescued from a nightmare journey at the hands of illegal dog smugglers. Police in Ireland seized around 50 of the dogs found in boxes stuffed into the back of two cars in Dublin on Tuesday. It's believed they were bred illegally on an Irish puppy farm and were destined for the UK. Officers arrested two men in their 20s and 30s at the scene under suspicion of committing animal cruelty.
Brian Gillen, chief executive of the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, urged the public to be vigilant when buying a pup. 'Do not buy from the boot of a car or a van, and always arrange to meet the puppy with its parents at the breeders home. 'The conditions the mother is living in is a good indication of the health and welfare of the animals,' said Mr Gillen. The men were arrested on Tuesday when police searched the vehicles which were stopped in the Coolock area of Dublin.
Boxed in: The puppies include around 25 Jack Russells, cocker and springer spaniels, and terrier, beagle and Labrador breeds
Several of the puppies are now in special care because they were too young when taken away from their mothers
Officers from the DSPCA took the pups into quarantine and safety, after they were discovered in boxes in the back of both vehicles. The dogs include around 25 Jack Russells, cocker and springer spaniels, and terrier, beagle and Labrador breeds. They were all given a veterinary check-up and placed in secure accommodation.
The animals have a number of conditions such as mange, ear mites, fleas, eye infections and parasitic infections, the DSPCA said. Several of the puppies are now in special care because they were too young when taken away from their mothers. Many of them also had their tails docked and claws removed.
None of the puppies will be available for new homes until DSPCA inspectors have concluded the animal cruelty investigation

Police have arrested two men in their 20s and 30s at the scene under suspicion of committing animal cruelty
The DSPCA said the discovery is a further reminder of the importance for Ireland to push through legislation making it easier to prevent animal cruelty and to prosecute offenders.
Making the microchipping of all dogs compulsory is one of the organisation's biggest goals, a spokesman said. None of the puppies will be available for new homes until DSPCA inspectors have concluded the animal cruelty investigation. The two men arrested at the scene are said to be in their 20s and 30s. They were taken to Coolock Garda Station in Dublin and have since been released.
The puppies were suffering from a number of infections and had ear mites, fleas and mange

'I was robbed of my childhood' Rape victim, 17, speaks out about five years of sexual abuse by her stepfather
A brave teenager has spoken out about the sex abuse she suffered
at the hands of her stepfather, a leading RAF serviceman. Danii Wiblin, has waived her right to anonymity to reveal how she was repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted by Alan Harrison, 43, for more than five years. The brave 17-year-old has told how she summoned up the courage to finally go to police in January this year and hopes her story will encourage other victims of abuse to do the same.
Abused: Danii Wiblin, 17, (left) suffered five years of horrific sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather Alan Harrison (right)
Miss Wiblin, who lives near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, opened her heart after paedophile Harrison was jailed for 12 years earlier this month. He admitted 11 child sex offences, including raping his step-daughter nine times and making indecent pictures of the attacks.
The horrifying catalogue of abuse began when Harrison was stationed in Oxfordshire, before moving to RAF Honington, Suffolk.
Harrison used to give Miss Wiblin alcohol and 20 cigarettes every time they had sex, his trial at Ipswich Crown Court heard. He even bought her a sex toy and underwear, the court was told, as he bombarded the schoolgirl with texts and phone calls. Miss Wiblin, who was just 11 when the abuse began, said last night that she did not feel as though she had a childhood as a result of the abuse. 'It was taken away from me when I was 11-and-a-half,' she said.
Brave: Miss Wiblin (pictured) spoke out after Harrison was jailed for 12 years earlier this month
The teenager said she felt as though the abuse had robbed her of her innocence. 'I thought it was about time to live the remainder of my life and not let it be ruined by him,' she said.
The courageous youngster revealed that at one point she turned to drink and drugs to help her deal with the mental effects of the abuse she suffered.
'I was smoking at 11,' she said.
Miss Wiblin said that she had contacted the police about the abuse at the age of 13 but that no-one believed her.
'I felt so alone that I dropped the allegations,' she said. Miss Wiblin went back to Suffolk Police in January this year but she revealed that Harrison tried to stop her revealing the truth for a second time.
'He was texting me while I was giving my (police) interview,' she said.
Miss Wiblin is full of praise for the officers who dealt with her case, particularly PC Lindsay Poole, of Suffolk's child protection team.
'I didn't think she was going to believe what I was saying, but she couldn't tell me enough that she believed me. Then Detective Inspector Adrian Randall came into the room and said "I believe you; we all believe you".'
She said the pain she was feeling eased for that split second 'because I was believed.' 'It felt like I wasn't alone after all those years of feeling alone,' she said.
After revealing what happened to the police, she said she began to go 'downhill' emotionally and 'started to feel guilty.'
'How I managed to deal with things was to write notes to myself about my feelings,' she said. 'After a while I stopped that and was suicidal.
'I did a lot of things to hurt myself. That was the wake-up call I needed. She said she now puts all the blame 'and any thought that it was my fault - on to him and it got me through it.'
'I said on (the police) video that despite how much I hate him, I don't really hate him. I hate what he has done to me.'
As the months went on, the traumatic legacy of the abuse continued with Ms Wiblin suffering dark, terrifying moments.
New life: Miss Wiblin has waived her right to anonymity and said she wanted to tell her devastating story to give other abuse victims the confidence to report their attackers
The teenager described having terrible nightmares which stopped her from sleeping.
'I used to scream my eyes out,' she said. 'I was on anti-depressants. I had counselling throughout the case, and then my mental state started to pick up after about three months.'
She said she feels like she has a future now and thanked PC Poole and the other people who have supported her, for helping her pull through.
'If it wasn't for Lindsay Poole and the people around me I don't think I would be here now,' she said. 'But I have got everything now, and I'm starting from scratch.'
Miss Wiblin said she would eventually like to start a charity to help victims of abuse.
'Not just for sexual abuse,' she said, 'but for all [kinds of] abuse. So people have someone they can go to so they can speak about what is happening to them, and you can put them on the right path to the people they need to speak to in order to [get] help.
When she was going through her ordeal, Miss Wiblin said she did not feel she had anyone to talk to. Asked what advice she would give to other children suffering abuse, she said: 'Don't let your fear hold you back, because it was my fear that held me back.
'At the time I had thought I was alone and no-one else was going through the same thing. But if I can do it, others can do it.'
Courage: The teenager says that coming forward to report was the first step to rebuilding her life
Miss Wiblin said that others must not be afraid to speak out.
Sentencing Harrison, Judge David Goodin told him: 'You committed offences of unimaginable gravity in abusing her as you did repeatedly, sustainedly and systematically.
'This sexual activity was unprotected. It included, on occasion, the application of alcohol to ease the path to which you subjected her. It would be difficult, in my judgment, to imagine more serious offences against a little girl.'
Referring to the indecent images Harrison took of himself and Miss Wiblin together, Judge Goodin branded them 'an outrageous indignity for a little girl to deal with.'
As well as jailing him, the judge also made Harrison subject to a sexual offences prevention order without a time limit. He was also added to the sex offenders' register.

Bad News For Super-Models: Computer-Generated Fashion Models Better Than Real Thing; Fashion Questions of the Day
Here is an easy prediction:
"Price of fashion models in advertisements is going to collapse, if indeed the industry survives at all."
Why should retailers pay for fashion models when an advertising department can generate models with the perfect height, weight, breast size, nationality, and complexion for whatever designs they want to promote?
This is Bad News for Super-Models!
MarketWatch describes the setup in 5 computer-generated sales pitches
To save on cost - and perhaps assembly time - Swedish retailing giant IKEA created computer-generated images of its furniture for the new catalogue, rather than hiring a photographer. By next year, a quarter of the scenes depicted in IKEA's print and online advertising will be digitally drawn rather than photographed.
The Wall Street Journal reported last week. In fact, IKEA says it is able to better depict its products with computer images than actual photography.
IKEA is not alone. Hollywood filmmakers increasingly create characters - and not just special effects - with CGI animation. And some fashion lines are finding that it's less expensive to create the perfect specimen digitally than to track down America's Next Top Model. These computer-generated realities may be cheaper, more appealing and more versatile than the genuine articles.
Some other related ideas discussed by the MarketWatch article also include simulated driving of cars, movie special efects, and 3-D dream homes.
Special effects are nothing new. New car models come out only once a year. And I believe most people want real images of homes, not simulated models.
In contrast, clothing changes four times a year with each season and also varies by weight, height, size, nationality, skin color, age, etc. Now the question of the day is:
"Do I care if the person wearing a sweater in a printed image is generated or real? Why would I? How would I know in the first place?"
Supermodels on the magazine covers may or may not go away due to importance of name recognition but every modeling job on down is likely to be eliminated over time.
Virtual models simply have too many advantages for real models to compete effectively. This in turn will pressure wages of even the super-models.
"These days, if you're looking for a career, fashion modelling is not a good choice anymore... We've got to look elsewhere, girls because now the machines are taking our jobs!"

Woman's Nose Bitten Off After Husband Says He Loves Her.
Lynne After Surgery |
Lynne Gough, who was in a violent relationship, told the world how her husband, Nick, punched her in the face for half an hour until it was numb that when he bit her, she didn't realise that her nose had actually been bitten off.
She was married to him for 24 years and had six children for him but the violence drove her into the arms of Chris, who later died of a sudden heart attack. Lynne took Nick back after he begs her only to disfigure her face.
'I found work in a care home and after a few years became a manager. He hated the fact that I had freedom. He wanted me at home the whole time,' Lynne says.
'He would wait for me at the front door and accuse me of having affairs with people at work.'
Lynne says the jealousy began in earnest when she had her first child with Nick.
'Even in the hospital on the day our baby was born he accused me of having affair with one of the members of staff. Then after that it was anyone. If I went shopping it was someone I'd meet on the street, or people at the children's school. He'd even question me if my underwear matched. When we were young and in love I thought it was flattering. But when I went out to work it got worse. Neither of us had any friends,' she says.
'I wasn't allowed to socialize. One day at the pub a man kissed me on the cheek. Nick accused me of having an affair with him, even though we'd only met half an hour earlier. That night when we got home, he started drinking more and got really aggressive and abusive.'
Shockingly, Lynne reveals that Nick would subject her to what he called 'Chinese Water Torture' at nights - splashing water on her face and straddling her, holding her eyes open - in an attempt to force her to admit to affairs. After all that, she still could not leave him because she loved him.
'The day he attacked me would have been Chris's 47th birthday, so I was obviously emotional, but I carried on as usual. I called Nick at work, told him I loved him and told him what we'd have for tea. He noticed when he came home that I'd been crying and didn't want to tell him, but he persisted until I admitted it would have been Chris's birthday. I could see a change in his eyes. He wasn't happy at all. I took the dog for a walk to try to calm the situation down. When I came back I went out into the back garden. He came out and that's when he started to attack me,' she says.
Lynne, who has now had her face fully rebuilt, said the doctors worked miracles with reconstructive surgery.
'The first time it didn't work and had to be taken back off, but now it's reattached and works normally - I can still smell.'
"Thank God she survived... what an experience..."
