Stampede in Moshi, Tanzania Kill at Least 20 People

Moshi, Tanzania - Information gathered from the NYTimes article concerning this story confirms that twenty people were found dead and a dozen others injured following a stampede that took place in the course of a church meeting this past Sunday.





Boniface Mwamposa is the Leader and Preacher of the Arise and Shine Ministry, Tanzania and according to a Government Spokesman's statement, the stampede was said to have happened during a prayer meeting with hundreds of worshippers in attendance. Church members were being ushered through an exit to walk on "anointed oil" during the service.

The Citizen, a local Tanzanian publication did a piece on church stampedes on the continent of Africa in the last decade and is explained in the piece that Preacher Mwaposa had flown to the city of Dar es Salaam to officiate another service in a different branch of his church after the stampede.  

Even though the charges have not been discussed, Mr. George Simbachawen, the Tanzanian Interior Minister confirmed Mr. Mwamposa's arrest. 

Mr. Peter Kilewo, an eye witness told reporters that the scene was "horrible" and that people were "trampled on mercilessly, jostling each other with elbows."
